Geography and climate

The city occupies river terraces and benchlands that are well suited to orchards and vineyards. History and name

The place name derives from the Wenatchi (Wenatchee) people, Indigenous inhabitants of the Columbia Plateau. Euro-American settlement increased in the late 19th century with irrigation projects, transportation links and commercial agriculture. Over time Wenatchee evolved from a riverside settlement into a regional center for shipping, processing and distribution of fruit.
