Overview

Chêne-Arnoult is a former French commune located in the Yonne department within the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region in the center of France (central France). Like many small rural communes in the region, it consisted of a modest village and surrounding farmland and woodlands. On 1 January 2016 the locality ceased to exist as an independent municipality when it was merged into the new commune of Charny-Orée-de-Puisaye.

Geography and built environment

The territory of Chêne-Arnoult was typical of north-central Burgundy: gently rolling fields, hedgerows, and small patches of forest. The village core generally featured traditional stone and timber houses, a local church or chapel, and agricultural buildings. Roads connecting it to neighboring villages and towns provided links for residents to schools, markets and administrative services.

History and administrative change

Small settlements such as Chêne-Arnoult often have roots extending several centuries, shaped by local agriculture and parish organization. In the 2010s a national trend encouraged communes to combine resources and services by forming larger entities. As part of that process Chêne-Arnoult joined neighboring communes to create the commune nouvelle of Charny-Orée-de-Puisaye, effective 1 January 2016, transferring local governance and many municipal functions to the new administration.

Economy, culture and uses

The local economy was predominantly rural: mixed farming, livestock and crop production are typical economic activities in the area. Cultural life in small communes centers on community events, agricultural fairs and the maintenance of local heritage. Visitors are often attracted to the quiet countryside, historic rural architecture and walking routes through the landscape.
