Charles Thone
Charles Thone (1924–2018) was an American Republican politician who represented Nebraska in the U.S. House and served as the state’s 34th governor from 1979 to 1983.
Charles Thone (January 4, 1924 – March 7, 2018) was an American Republican politician from Nebraska. He represented Nebraska’s 1st Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1971 to 1979 and served as the 34th governor of Nebraska from January 1979 until January 1983. Thone’s political career spanned the 1970s and early 1980s and reflected the priorities of a largely rural, Midwestern state.

Thone was born in Hartington, Nebraska and later pursued higher education at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. His upbringing in northeastern Nebraska and his university studies placed him in the mainstream of the state’s civic and political life. Thone’s personal background shaped his public service orientation toward state and agricultural concerns.
Political career and congressional service
Thone was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1970 and served four consecutive terms from January 1971 through January 1979. During his time in Congress he represented Nebraska’s 1st District, participating in federal legislative work on matters relevant to his constituents. He left the House to run for governor in 1978.
Governorship (1979–1983)
As Nebraska’s 34th governor, Thone held office from January 4, 1979 to January 6, 1983. His single term encompassed state-level responsibilities for budgets, economic development, and administration of state services. In the 1982 gubernatorial election he was defeated by Democrat Bob Kerrey, who succeeded him in office.
Later life and legacy
After leaving elected office Thone remained a recognized figure in Nebraska politics and civic life. He is remembered for his roles at both the federal and state levels and for representing a generation of Midwestern Republican leaders. Thone died in Lincoln, Nebraska on March 7, 2018 at age 94; the reported cause was respiratory failure.
