Architecture and features
The central monument is a single-nave, domed Armenian church built in the medieval period. Its exterior walls are decorated with extensive bas-reliefs illustrating biblical episodes, saints and animal motifs, making the building an important example of Armenian stone-carving. Surrounding structures once supported monastic life: cells, smaller chapels and service buildings, now largely in ruins.
History and legend
The island developed under the regional Armenian kingdom of Vaspurakan and served as a religious center. Local folklore links the island’s name to a princess called Tamar (T'amar), a popular tale told to explain its romantic name. Over centuries the site witnessed changes in political control and periods of neglect.
