The Capital Governorate is one of the five primary administrative divisions of Bahrain. It centers on the country's capital city and serves as the principal seat of national government, major commercial activity and many cultural institutions. The governorate brings together densely built urban districts, diplomatic and business areas, and portions of older municipal neighbourhoods.

Territory and administration

Administratively the governorate encompasses parts of several former municipalities, including Al Manamah, Ras Roman and Jidd Haffs. Local government is headed by an appointed governor and municipal agencies that manage services such as planning, sanitation and traffic within the governorate's boundaries. For an overview of how it fits into the national structure see the list of governorates.

Characteristics and built environment

Physically the area is largely urban and coastal, with a mix of high-rise office districts, traditional souqs, residential neighbourhoods and waterfront developments. It contains banking and commercial centres that attract domestic and international firms, as well as hotels, restaurants and retail streets that support tourism and commerce.

Culture, economy and landmarks

The governorate hosts many of Bahrain's important cultural sites and institutions, alongside embassies and government ministries. Visitors and residents find museums, markets, modern cultural venues and ceremonial squares. The local economy is diverse, driven by public administration, finance, retail, hospitality and services that cater to both residents and the many commuters who work in the capital each day.

History and development

The contemporary boundaries reflect administrative reforms that moved from older municipal divisions to the present governorate system. Over recent decades urban growth, land reclamation and new infrastructure projects have reshaped shorelines and expanded commercial districts while parts of the older city retain traditional architecture and marketplaces.
