Overview: Caquetá Department lies in the southern part of Colombia, within the Amazonian foothills and lowlands. The department covers about 88,965 km² and its administrative capital is the city of Florencia. Population estimates have varied; a commonly cited figure from the early 2010s is roughly 465,000 inhabitants, but demographic patterns continue to change due to migration and development.

Location and geography

Caquetá sits in the Amazon region of southern Colombia. It borders several departments: to the west are Cauca and Huila, to the north Meta, to the northeast Guaviare, to the east Vaupés, and to the south the departments of Amazonas and Putumayo. The terrain ranges from Andean foothills in the northwest to extensive lowland rainforest and river valleys. The Caquetá River, which gives the department its name, is a major waterway that flows eastward and becomes the Japurá River in Brazil.

History and peoples

The area now called Caquetá has long been home to Indigenous communities, and later attracted colonists during the 19th and 20th centuries who established agriculture and cattle ranching. In recent decades the department experienced social and security challenges that shaped settlement and land use; public investments and peace processes have influenced change since the early 21st century.

Ecology and conservation

Located largely within the Amazon biome, Caquetá contains extensive tropical rainforest with high biodiversity. It is habitat for many species of mammals, birds and plants, and includes riverine ecosystems and wetlands. Conservation efforts, protected areas, and sustainable-use initiatives seek to balance preservation with local livelihoods and regional development.

Economy, administration and municipalities

The regional economy is based on a mix of agriculture, cattle ranching, forestry and other extractive activities, along with trade centered on Florencia. Small towns and municipalities play key roles in local services and markets. Notable municipalities include Florencia (the capital), San Vicente del Caguán and Cartagena del Chairá, among others.
