History

The airline began operations on September 1, 1937, under the name Trans‑Canada Air Lines. Its first service ran from Vancouver to Seattle, marking the start of what would become a nationwide carrier. The company adopted the Air Canada name in 1964 as part of a rebranding. In 1989 the airline was privatized, shifting from government ownership to a publicly traded company. In subsequent decades it absorbed other carriers and faced labour disputes, including a significant 1998 pilots' strike.

Operations and network

Air Canada maintains major hubs at Toronto Pearson, Montréal–Trudeau and Vancouver, and it serves a mix of transcontinental and long‑haul international routes.
