Ray Benson (born March 16, 1951) is an American country musician, widely recognized as a singer, guitarist and band leader. He founded and has led the long-running ensemble Asleep at the Wheel, a group credited with preserving and popularizing the Western swing tradition in modern popular music.
Musical style and early development
Benson's work draws on the Texas-Western swing of the 1930s and 1940s while incorporating contemporary country and Americana elements. The band's arrangements often feature steel guitar, fiddle and swing-era rhythms, and Benson's approach emphasizes live performance, tight ensemble playing and a repertoire that ranges from classic swing to original compositions and country standards.

With Asleep at the Wheel Benson has released more than 20 albums and earned multiple industry honors, including nine Grammy Awards. He issued his first solo album in 2003 and has remained active as both a recording artist and a touring performer. In addition to fronting his band, Benson is a noted producer and has contributed to numerous other artists' projects, working on a variety of albums and singles.
Selected collaborations
He has also worked with and produced records for a range of other performers across country and roots music, including artists such as Dale Watson, Suzy Bogguss, Aaron Watson, Carolyn Wonderland and Aaron Neville.

His career combines performance, leadership and production, making him a pivotal figure in contemporary American roots music.
