Overview
Braggio is a small mountain village in the Calanca valley of the canton of Graubünden (Grisons), in Switzerland. It was a former municipality in the district of Moesa. On 1 January 2015 the municipality of Braggio joined neighbouring communities to form the new municipality of Calanca.
Geography and character
Perched on a steep slope above the valley floor, Braggio overlooks terraced fields, chestnut groves and forested slopes. Buildings are typically stone or wood with narrow lanes and small public spaces that reflect centuries of mountain settlement. The village's position gives views of surrounding peaks and the watercourses that shape the Calanca valley.
Former neighbours and local links
Before the 2015 merger Braggio was administratively separate but closely linked to nearby villages. These neighbouring communities included Arvigo, Cauco and Selma, which share cultural and economic ties rooted in the valley landscape.
History and administration
Like many small Alpine municipalities, Braggio managed local services on a modest scale and preserved traditional ways of life while adapting to modern cantonal regulations. The decision to merge into Calanca reflected efforts to consolidate municipal administration, maintain public services and strengthen representation at the cantonal level.
Economy, culture and visiting
The local economy historically centered on subsistence agriculture, pastoralism, forestry and seasonal activities; today small-scale tourism and preservation of cultural heritage are also important. The area is largely Italian-speaking, with village life marked by regional culinary traditions and architecture. Visitors come for quiet rural character, walks on well-marked trails, and to experience the traditional settlement pattern typical of Graubünden's southern valleys.
- Typical activities: hiking, village walks, observing traditional architecture.
- Landscape: terraced agriculture and chestnut woods.
- Access: local mountain roads connect Braggio with the rest of the Calanca valley.
