Bent Fabricius‑Bjerre (7 December 1924 – 28 July 2020), widely known by his stage name Bent Fabric, was a Danish pianist and composer. Born in Frederiksberg, he developed a musical career that spanned several decades and combined roots in jazz with a gift for concise, melodic instrumental writing that appealed to both popular and film audiences.

Early career and record business

After World War II he formed a small jazz ensemble and became active on the Copenhagen scene. In 1950 he co‑founded the independent label Metronome Records, which played a role in promoting Scandinavian singers, instrumentalists and recordings. His activities as a bandleader, studio pianist and record‑company founder gave him a broad perspective on performance, arranging and production.

Breakthrough composition

Fabric's most widely heard piece was the instrumental originally titled "Omkring et flygel" (literally "Around a Piano"). Issued internationally under the title "Alley Cat" in the early 1960s, the tune features a playful, syncopated piano line and a compact form that allowed it to cross pop, jazz and easy‑listening playlists. It became his best‑known composition and has remained associated with his name in many countries.

Style, media work and later activity

Though grounded in jazz sensibilities, Bent Fabric often favored clear melodic statements and arrangements suited to radio, television and film. Over the years he wrote and arranged music for screen projects and recorded numerous albums that blended light jazz, popular instrumental themes and occasional orchestral backing. His adaptability as a pianist and composer kept him active in studio work and public appearances well into later life.

Legacy and final years

Fabric is remembered for bridging Danish jazz traditions and international popular tastes through a concise melodic language and savvy involvement in the record business. He remained a public musical figure for many decades and his name is still invoked in discussions of mid‑20th century European instrumental pop. Bent Fabric died on 28 July 2020 in Copenhagen at the age of 95.
