Overview
B. Subhashan Reddy (2 March 1943 – 1 May 2019) was an Indian jurist who held senior judicial offices in several southern Indian high courts and later led a state human rights body. He is remembered for serving as chief justice in two different high courts and for becoming the first chairperson of the Andhra Pradesh Human Rights Commission.
Judicial career
Reddy built a long career in law and the judiciary that culminated in appointments as Chief Justice. He served as Chief Justice of the Madras High Court from 2001 until 2004, and subsequently as Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court from 2004 to 2005. The office of chief justice normally includes administrative leadership of the court, assignment of cases and guidance on judicial practice in the state high court.
Human Rights Commission
After his tenure on the bench, Reddy was appointed in August 2005 as the inaugural chairperson of the Andhra Pradesh Human Rights Commission, a statutory body set up to inquire into human rights violations, recommend remedial measures and promote awareness. As first chairperson he helped shape the commission’s early procedures and public profile.
Background and personal life
He was born in Amberpet, a neighbourhood of Hyderabad. Over decades of public service he was associated with judicial institutions and human rights work in southern India. He died on 1 May 2019 in Gachibowli, Hyderabad, at the age of 76.
