Overview

Tom Steyer (born June 27, 1957) is an American financier, philanthropist and political activist. He rose to prominence as a senior partner at the hedge fund Farallon Capital before turning much of his attention to environmental causes, progressive politics and civic philanthropy. Steyer is widely recognized for large-scale political advertising campaigns, climate-focused organizing, and for founding institutions intended to support community banking and voter engagement.

Finance career and institutions

Steyer began his professional career in finance and became a founding or early leader at several investment ventures. He was a co-senior managing partner of Farallon Capital Management, an investment firm based in San Francisco. After leaving day-to-day management in the 2010s, he shifted substantial resources into philanthropic endeavors and civic projects. With his wife he also co-founded Beneficial State Bank, a community-oriented financial institution designed to support underserved regions and mission-driven lending.

Philanthropy and environmental advocacy

In the 2000s and 2010s Steyer became a major funder of climate change advocacy and clean-energy causes. He has supported environmental research, public-awareness campaigns and organizations focused on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and encouraging policy responses to climate science. His philanthropic activity includes grantmaking, the creation of nonprofit political organizations, and investments aimed at aligning capital with social and environmental goals. Notable initiatives tied to his name have included voter engagement projects targeting younger and more diverse electorates.

Political activity and campaigns

Steyer has used both personal donations and media campaigns to influence public debate and policy. In 2017 he financed a television campaign — reported at the time as costing around $10 million — that called for the impeachment of President Donald Trump. He continued to back digital and grassroots efforts advocating accountability and opposition to the administration’s policies. Steyer also publicly weighed a run for Governor of California during the 2018 election cycle before ultimately focusing on national organizing instead.

2019–2020 presidential candidacy

On July 9, 2019, Steyer announced his candidacy for President of the United States in the 2020 Democratic primary. His campaign centered on climate action, economic justice and expanding civic participation. Despite heavy spending on advertising and organization, he did not win widespread support in early state contests and ended his campaign after the primary in South Carolina on February 29, 2020.

Boards, education and public roles

Steyer has been active in higher-education governance and public affairs. He served on the Board of Trustees at Stanford University from 2012 until 2017 and has supported research, teaching and campus initiatives related to energy and public policy. His formal education includes undergraduate and graduate degrees, and his career brings together private investment experience with public-interest philanthropy.
