Overview
Nelle Clyde Wilson Reagan (July 24, 1883 – July 25, 1962) was the mother of United States President Ronald Reagan and his elder brother Neil "Moon" Reagan. A Midwestern woman of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, she is remembered primarily for her role in raising two sons whose lives would gain public attention. Nelle's life illustrates the experience of many American families who moved within a region in search of work and stability.
Ancestry and early life
Nelle was born into a family of mixed heritage often described as Scots and English ancestry. She grew up in rural settings typical of the American Midwest at that time, where small towns and farming communities shaped daily routines. She met her future husband on the prairie, a landscape that characterized much of central Illinois life in the era: open farmland with tightly knit town centers and churches that anchored social life.
Marriage and family
In November 1904 she married John "Jack" Reagan, often referred to in records simply as Jack Reagan. The couple established their household in Fulton, Illinois, where they were married, and later moved several times according to Jack's employment. Their two sons, Neil and Ronald, were born during this period. After the birth of her second son, Nelle was advised by medical professionals of the era not to have additional children; the couple adhered to that guidance.
Life on the move and daily role
The Reagans lived in a number of Illinois communities, including a lengthy stay in Tampico and subsequent moves to larger centers such as Chicago and other small towns. Where they lived depended largely on job opportunities and the economic demands of the time. Nelle's responsibilities, like those of many mothers of her generation, centered on homemaking, child-rearing, church and neighborhood activities; she provided continuity for the family amid frequent relocations.
Legacy and influence
Nelle's influence is most visible in the lives of her sons, especially in accounts that emphasize family stability, local community ties, and the values she passed on. Although she did not become a public figure herself, her role as a mother contributed to the formative environment that shaped her children's later pursuits. Writers and historians who study the family commonly note her steady presence during the boys' upbringing.
Later years and death
In her later years Nelle developed health problems leading to the diagnosis that ultimately involved complications from Alzheimer's disease. She died on July 25, 1962, aged 79. Her death and the illness that preceded it are sometimes noted alongside the later history of her son Ronald Reagan, who decades later would also be affected by the same neurodegenerative condition.
