Miki Muster (born Nikolaj Muster, 22 November 1925 – 7 May 2018) was a Slovenian artist whose work included comics, book illustration, short animation and sculptural model work. Over a career that began in the post‑war period he became one of the most widely recognised figures in Slovenian popular visual culture. For concise reference to the roles he filled see sculptor, illustrator, cartoonist and animator.
Early life and career beginnings
Muster was born in Murska Sobota in what was then Yugoslavia. He began publishing comic strips and illustrations in the early 1950s and soon became a regular contributor to children’s magazines and periodicals. His early professional work combined sequential art for print with small animated pieces and model‑making, activities that helped him develop a clear visual style suited to both page and screen.
Zvitorepec and major works
His best known creation is the comic series Zvitorepec, launched in 1952 and published for many years in popular magazines of the period. The strip featured anthropomorphic animals in episodic, gag‑driven adventures aimed at young readers but enjoyed by a wider audience. Zvitorepec and its recurring characters became familiar fixtures in Slovenian childhoods and were later collected in book form and republications.
Other media and practice
Alongside comics Muster worked as an illustrator of children’s books and produced short animated films and sequences. He also modelled figures and practised sculptural techniques related to character design; these activities reinforced his understanding of form, volume and movement, and informed both his drawn and animated work.
Style and influences
Muster’s drawing is often noted for its clean line, clear silhouettes and an emphasis on expressive gestures and timing. Observers have pointed to affinities with mid‑century cartoon traditions outside Slovenia; some accounts mention the Argentine cartoonist Guillermo Mordillo among the international names occasionally cited in discussions of stylistic parallels, though direct influence is not uniformly asserted. Muster combined local cultural references with broadly accessible visual humour.
Legacy and recognition
Muster is widely regarded as a formative figure in Slovenian comic art and children’s illustration. His characters and stories have been reprinted, anthologised and shown in exhibitions, and his approach influenced later generations of illustrators and animators in the region. Cultural institutions and peers commemorated his contributions through reviews, retrospectives and public remembrances after his death.
Later life and death
In later years Muster withdrew from frequent public work. He died on 7 May 2018 in a nursing home in Notranje Gorice, Slovenia, after a long illness related to Alzheimer's disease. His passing prompted tributes from the illustration and cultural community and renewed interest in his published and audiovisual work.
