Overview

Uttar Pradesh, the most populous state of India, is subdivided into 75 districts that form the primary units of local administration. Districts serve as the basic links between the state government and local bodies; each is headed by a district magistrate (collector) responsible for law and order, revenue collection and coordination of development schemes.

Organization and characteristics

Those 75 districts are grouped into several administrative divisions to simplify governance. Districts vary greatly in size, population and economic profile: some are densely urban and industrial (for example, Gautam Buddh Nagar and Ghaziabad), while others are predominantly rural or forested (for example, Sonbhadra and Shravasti). Common district functions include land administration, disaster response, public health and implementation of state programs.

History and development

The district system in Uttar Pradesh has evolved over two centuries. Many districts trace their origins to British colonial administration, and boundaries have changed repeatedly since independence to reflect population growth, political decisions and administrative convenience. In recent decades new districts have been created by carving out areas from larger ones, and several places have been renamed (for example, Allahabad → Prayagraj; Faizabad → Ayodhya).

Examples and notable districts

  • Kanpur (Kanpur Nagar/Dehat) – industrial and population center.
