Overview

The U.S. state of Indiana is divided into 92 counties. Each county functions as a primary sub‑state unit of government, providing local administration, courts and infrastructure within its boundaries. Counties range from densely populated urban areas to sparsely settled rural regions, and vary considerably in land area and population.

Government and responsibilities

County government in Indiana is organized around two principal bodies: the county council, which handles fiscal matters, and the board of commissioners, which carries out executive and administrative duties. In addition to those bodies, most counties elect or appoint officials such as sheriff, prosecutor, clerk, auditor, treasurer, recorder and assessor to manage law enforcement, records, finances and property valuation.

  • Public safety: sheriff and local courts
  • Records and property: recorder, assessor, treasurer
  • Infrastructure: roads, bridges and local planning
  • Health and human services: county health departments and welfare coordination

History and naming

Most of Indiana's counties were established in the 19th century as the state was surveyed and settled following territorial times and statehood. County names reflect a wide variety of sources: national leaders, early settlers, Native American tribes and natural features. The pattern of creation and boundary adjustments evolved as transportation and population shifted across the state.

Notable counties and examples

Some counties are widely known because they contain major cities or serve as regional economic centers. Marion County contains the state capital, Indianapolis, and is the state's most populous county. Other populous counties include those that encompass large cities and industrial areas in northern and northeastern Indiana. At the other extreme, several counties remain predominantly agricultural and have small, dispersed populations.
