Overview
Kenneth Duncan "Ken" Morrison CBE (20 October 1931 – 1 February 2017) was a British businessman best known for leading Wm Morrison Supermarkets, commonly called Morrisons. He served for many decades as the group's chairman and later became its Life President. Under his stewardship the company grew from a regional family grocer into one of the United Kingdom's major supermarket chains.
Early life and entry into retail
Born into the family that started the business, Morrison worked in the family firm from a young age and gradually moved into management. The grocery company had its origins in Bradford and retained a strong regional identity even as it expanded. Morrison's approach combined a focus on food retailing fundamentals with an emphasis on cost control and regional supply chains.
Development of the business
During his leadership the company pursued organic growth and acquisitions to broaden its presence across Britain. Morrisons built a reputation for in-store fresh food, private-label lines and an emphasis on serving local communities. Notable milestones in the firm's growth included national expansion and the acquisition of substantial competitors, which elevated Morrisons into the top tier of UK supermarket groups.
Management style and reputation
Morrison was widely regarded as a pragmatic, hands-on executive who kept a comparatively low public profile. He was known for his attention to operational detail and an emphasis on value for customers, traits that helped the company compete in a crowded market. He received national honours for his contributions to British retail, reflected by his CBE.
Legacy and significance
Ken Morrison’s impact is evident in the size and structure of the modern supermarket industry in the UK. His stewardship turned a family-owned grocer into a major national brand, influencing retail practices around fresh food provision, supply chain integration and regional sourcing. The business remained associated with its northern roots even as it grew nationwide.
Death and remembrance
Morrison died at his home in Myton-on-Swale, North Yorkshire, on 1 February 2017 after a short illness. Tributes from the retail sector and local communities recognised his long involvement with British food retailing and the role he played in building one of the country’s leading supermarket chains.
