Blue Mountains

Shared name for several mountain areas worldwide—notably in Australia, Jamaica, the U.S. Pacific Northwest and Ontario—recognized for blue haze, distinct ecology, recreation and cultural importance.

The name "Blue Mountains" is applied to several distinct upland regions around the world. Although these places are geographically unrelated, they share a common reputation for steep valleys, forested slopes and a bluish visual cast that inspired the name in many languages. Well-known examples include the Blue Mountains of New South Wales in Australia, the Blue Mountains of Jamaica, the Blue Mountains of the northwestern United States, and The Blue Mountains municipality and resort area in Ontario, Canada.

Major places called "Blue Mountains"

Australia (New South Wales): West of Sydney, the Blue Mountains form a sandstone plateau incised by deep gorges and cliffs. The region is noted for extensive eucalyptus forests, dramatic lookouts, rock formations such as the Three Sisters, and conservation reserves that are part of a World Heritage area. The Greater Blue Mountains host a number of rare or relict plants, including the recently famous Wollemi pine.

Jamaica: The Blue Mountains are the island's central highlands and include Blue Mountain Peak, the highest point on Jamaica. Slopes rise into cloud forest at higher elevation and are the traditional growing area for Blue Mountain coffee, a product prized for its flavor and export value.

Pacific Northwest, United States: The Blue Mountains are a mountain complex in northeastern Oregon and southeastern Washington. The area combines mixed conifer forests, montane meadows and rangelands. Its geology reflects volcanic activity and uplift, and the region supports timber production, grazing and a variety of outdoor recreation opportunities.

Canada (Ontario): The Blue Mountains is also the name of a town and resort area on the southeastern shore of Georgian Bay. It lies beside a limestone escarpment and is better known for skiing, mountain biking and cottage-country tourism than for a single continuous high ridge.

Why distant ridges look blue

A blue appearance can arise from several factors. Atmospheric scattering of shorter (blue) wavelengths makes distant ridgelines appear bluish. In some forested landscapes, volatile organic compounds emitted by plants—most famously eucalyptus oils—can produce a characteristic bluish haze under certain humidity and light conditions. Moisture, particulates and the angle of sunlight also affect perceived color.

Ecology, uses and cultural importance

  • Biodiversity and conservation: Many Blue Mountains areas include protected parks that conserve endemic plants and animals and important catchments for water supply.
  • Recreation and tourism: Hiking, climbing, scenic drives, birdwatching and winter sports are key activities that support local economies.
  • Agriculture and resources: Some ranges support specialty crops (notably Jamaica's Blue Mountain coffee), forestry and grazing, with associated management challenges.
  • Cultural significance: Indigenous and local communities maintain long-standing cultural connections to these landscapes; they feature in local stories, land use and heritage.

Each Blue Mountains region has its own geology, ecology and human history. Their shared name reflects a recurring visual impression rather than any single physical connection: a combination of vegetation, atmosphere and distance that makes upland landscapes often appear blue from afar.
