Geography and natural features

The island features gently rolling plains interrupted by sand dunes and a few low hills. Freshwater flows are limited: the main seasonal channel is the Ribeira do Rabil. The coastline offers broad beaches and offshore sandbanks. A compact dune desert known as the Deserto de Viana stands out for its windblown sands and sparse vegetation.

History

European sources traditionally credit the discovery of Boa Vista to Genoese navigators in the 15th century, often named as António de Noli and Diogo Gomes around 1460. Initially uninhabited, the island was later settled as part of Portuguese expansion across the Atlantic. For centuries it served as a stopover for ships and supported small-scale salt production and fishing.

Ecology and conservation

Boa Vista's beaches are internationally important nesting sites for sea turtles, particularly the loggerhead (Caretta caretta). The dune systems and coastal wetlands support specialized plants and migratory birds. Conservation efforts address pressure from tourism, coastal development and protection of nesting habitats.

Economy and tourism

Tourism is now the dominant economic activity, driven by beaches, water sports such as wind- and kite-surfing, and wildlife viewing. Sal Rei provides accommodation, transport links and local services; the island is also served by an international airport and regular ferry connections to other islands. Traditional livelihoods such as fishing and small-scale salt extraction continue alongside tourism.
