Keith Michael Patrick O'Brien (17 March 1938 – 19 March 2018) was a Scottish Catholic prelate who served as Archbishop of Saint Andrews and Edinburgh from 1985 until his resignation in 2013. He was a leading figure in the Roman Catholic Church in Scotland and later a member of the College of Cardinals, known for his outspoken views on social and moral issues as well as for the controversy that ended his active ministry.
Career and public profile
During his years as archbishop O'Brien was a prominent voice in debates about religion and public life in Scotland. He frequently spoke on matters of sexual ethics, marriage and family life, and on the role of religion in public policy. He opposed the liberalisation of laws affecting same-sex relationships and same-sex marriage, at one point describing such changes as "moral degradation" in public statements. His positions made him both influential among conservative Catholics and a polarising figure in wider Scottish society.
Allegations, resignation and Vatican response
In early 2013 reports surfaced alleging that O'Brien had engaged in inappropriate sexual behaviour with junior and student priests and had abused his position of authority. In response to these allegations he resigned his office as Archbishop of Saint Andrews and Edinburgh. The Holy See later issued directives limiting his public ministry: in March 2015 the Vatican announced that, while he remained a member of the College of Cardinals, he was to refrain from exercising the rights and duties attached to that office, in particular participating in papal conclaves.
Legacy and death
O'Brien's legacy is mixed. Supporters point to his leadership of the Catholic community in Scotland and his engagement on moral and pastoral matters. Critics highlight his rigid stances on sexuality and the damage caused by the misconduct allegations and ensuing investigation. He died on 19 March 2018 at the age of 80 after suffering complications from a fall; his death occurred in a hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne.
