Joseph Black (16 April 1728 – 6 December 1799) was a Scottish physician, chemist and teacher whose experimental methods helped transform chemistry into a quantitative science. Born to Scottish parents in Bordeaux, he spent most of his career in Scotland and is remembered for discovering carbon dioxide, introducing the concepts of latent heat and specific heat, and for his precise balances and measurements.

Life and career

Black trained in medicine and taught natural philosophy and medicine at leading Scottish universities. His lectures combined careful demonstration with accurate measurement, and they drew a circle of students and colleagues who later advanced chemistry and engineering. His approach emphasized reproducible experiments and numerical measurement rather than only qualitative description.

Major contributions

  • Fixed air (carbon dioxide): Black identified and characterized a gas released during fermentation and calcination, calling it "fixed air," now known as carbon dioxide, and showed it was chemically distinct from common air.
  • Latent heat: He introduced the idea that heat can be absorbed or released without changing temperature when a substance changes state; this notion later influenced the development of thermodynamics and steam technology.
  • Specific heat: Black distinguished how different materials require different amounts of heat to change temperature, an early step toward calorimetry.
  • Quantitative methods: He developed and used sensitive analytical balances and weighing techniques that allowed detection of small mass changes in chemical reactions.

These discoveries were practical as well as theoretical: the latent heat concept helped engineers understand steam and condensation, and Black's precision instruments and methods set standards for later laboratory practice.
