Overview

John Kenneth Holt (11 July 1945 – 19 October 2014) was a Jamaican singer and songwriter whose warm tenor and melodic sense made him a defining voice in rocksteady and reggae. He first gained public attention as a founding member and lead singer of The Paragons, and later built a long solo career that extended his influence beyond Jamaica.

Musical style and contributions

Holt's singing was noted for its smooth, intimate delivery and strong sense of melody. His work bridged the rocksteady era of the 1960s and the fuller reggae productions that followed. As a songwriter he combined romantic themes with gentle rhythmic phrasing; one of his best-known compositions is The Tide Is High, which crossed into international pop when covered by other artists.

Career and development

With The Paragons Holt recorded several important tracks before leaving to pursue solo projects. His solo recordings included love ballads and reggae interpretations of country and pop songs, earning both Jamaican and international audiences.
