Gerardo Luigi "Jerry" Colonna (September 17, 1904 – November 21, 1986) was a prominent Italian-born entertainer who became a well-known American comedian, singer, actor and musician. He achieved national fame during the golden age of radio as a comic foil and frequent collaborator with Bob Hope. Colonna combined a booming voice, exaggerated facial expressions and a dramatic handlebar mustache to create a highly recognizable stage persona.
Early life
Colonna was born in Boston, in the state of Massachusetts, into an Italian-American family. Musical interests and performance skills shaped his early development, and he moved from local shows and musical engagements into radio and recording work as broadcast entertainment expanded in the 1930s and 1940s.
Career and comic persona
Colonna’s career spanned radio, film, recordings, television and live appearances. He became especially visible as the zany, loud-voiced sidekick on popular radio programs, where his interplay with headline stars became a staple of variety comedy. His visual trademarks — large mustache, bulging eyes and broad gestures — reinforced his vocal style and helped sell rapid-fire jokes and absurdist non sequiturs to nationwide audiences.
Collaborations and appearances
A long association with Bob Hope brought Colonna into films, USO tours and stage shows, exposing him to audiences beyond radio. He also appeared in other feature films and in guest roles on television as the entertainment industry shifted in the postwar decades. Colonna’s work was typical of multi-platform performers of his generation who moved fluidly between recording studios, broadcast studios and live venues.
Legacy and personal life
Colonna is remembered for his outsized comic personality and for helping define the role of the radio sidekick in mid-20th-century American entertainment. He married Florence Purcell around 1930 and they had a son, Robert. In later years he lived in Southern California and died from kidney failure on November 21, 1986 in Woodland Hills, California, at the age of 82.
