Carl Peter Henrik Dam (1895–1976) was a Danish scientist whose experiments in the early 20th century led to the identification of a fat-soluble nutrient now known as vitamin K. His work established a biochemical link between dietary factors and the blood-clotting process, and it led to broad medical and nutritional applications.

Career and research approach

Trained in chemistry and physiology, Dam combined animal feeding studies with biochemical analysis to investigate the effects of diet on health. Working with chicks and controlled rations, he observed bleeding disorders that could be prevented by adding particular lipid fractions to the diet. He reported these findings while based in Denmark and later collaborated with other laboratories to characterize the active substance.

Discovery of vitamin K

Dam named the new nutrient "vitamin K" from the German word Koagulation, reflecting its key role in blood coagulation. His experiments showed that the substance was essential for normal clotting and that deficiency produced hemorrhaging in growing animals. Chemical isolation and structural work were subsequently advanced by other researchers.

Significance and applications

The identification of vitamin K clarified previously puzzling bleeding disorders and informed clinical practice in surgery, neonatology and nutrition. Vitamin K and its derivatives are used to treat or prevent deficiency, to manage anticoagulation therapy when reversal is needed, and to reduce bleeding risks in newborns and malnourished patients.

Recognition and legacy
