Hasan Mushaima is a long-standing opposition figure in Bahrain. He leads the Haq Movement for Liberty and Democracy as its secretary-general and has campaigned for expanded political rights and reform within the country. Mushaima was among the founders of the opposition group Al Wefaq and was active during the 1994 unrest that sought changes to Bahrain’s political system.
Political activity and detentions
Throughout his public life Mushaima has faced repeated arrests and periods of detention by Bahraini authorities. His role as an outspoken critic of the ruling authorities and as an organiser of protests has been central to the charges brought against him at multiple times.
Health, travel and return in 2011
In 2010 Mushaima traveled to Great Britain for medical treatment related to lung cancer. During the nationwide protests that began in February 2011 he sought to return to Bahrain to participate in the demonstrations. He was prevented from continuing his journey while in Lebanon, and was only able to enter Bahrain on 26 February 2011.
Trial and sentence
Following his return, Mushaima was detained and brought before a military court. On 22 June 2011 he was sentenced to life imprisonment on charges that included attempting to overthrow the monarchy.
