Overview

Hans Rosenfeldt (born Hans Petersson; 13 July 1964) is a Swedish screenwriter, radio presenter, novelist and actor. He is best known internationally as the creator of the Swedish–Danish crime drama The Bridge (Bron/Broen) and as the writer behind the British series Marcella. His career spans television, radio and fiction, and he has written and developed several notable Nordic dramas.

Rosenfeldt was born in Borås, in the historical province of Västergötland. Early biographical details often note his remarkable height—around 2.06 metres (6 ft 9 in)—and an early interest in pursuing basketball as a sport. He later moved into performance and writing, adopting the name Hans Rosenfeldt for his public career.

Major works and themes

Across his body of work Rosenfeldt has gravitated toward crime, psychological drama and complex character-driven plots. His breakthrough television creations include the ensemble drama De drabbade (2003) and the legal-thriller Oskyldigt dömd (2008–2009). He achieved wider international recognition with The Bridge (2011–2018), a cross-border police procedural that helped define aspects of contemporary Nordic noir. The British serial Marcella (from 2016) brought Rosenfeldt's sensibility to an English-language audience.

  • Notable series: De drabbade; Oskyldigt dömd; The Bridge; Marcella.
  • Mediums: television drama, radio presenting, novels and occasional acting.

Rosenfeldt's work is often cited for tight plotting, morally ambiguous protagonists and strong atmospheres that emphasize place and procedural detail. The Bridge in particular demonstrated how a co-produced show can use geography as a narrative device: a crime that crosses a national boundary becomes a way to explore institutional, cultural and personal tensions.

Outside his professional life Rosenfeldt is married with three children and lives in Täby. He has discussed his early ambitions to play basketball and how that athletic predisposition later gave way to a career in media and storytelling. His change of name from Hans Petersson to Hans Rosenfeldt and his varied roles—writer, presenter and performer—contribute to a public profile recognizable in Sweden and beyond.

Rosenfeldt's international impact includes inspiring adaptations and remakes that translate Nordic crime narratives into other cultural contexts. While he remains primarily associated with television drama, his work continues to influence contemporary approaches to serialized crime storytelling and cross-border production models.
