Habib Mohebian (Persian: حبیب محبیان; 27 September 1947 – 10 June 2016), widely known by the mononym Habib, was a prominent Iranian singer-songwriter. Born in Tehran, he developed a long career as a creator and performer of Persian-language popular songs. Habib became best known for a handful of enduring ballads that mixed melancholic melodies with direct, emotive lyrics and remain familiar to many Persian-speaking listeners.
Musical style and themes
Habib's music combined melodic elements of traditional Persian songcraft with the structures and instrumentation of modern popular music. His voice and delivery often emphasized intimate, plaintive narratives about love, loneliness, family, and memory. Several of his best-known pieces are sparing, piano- or guitar-accompanied ballads that foreground the lyrics and melody, contributing to their long-lasting appeal.
Notable songs
- "Marde Tanhaye Shab" — often translated as "The Lonely Man of the Night," this song is among his most recognized and frequently cited works.
- "Shahla" — reportedly inspired in part by an Azeri performer, this song has been the subject of public curiosity and a common misconception linking it to Habib's personal life. His former spouse's name was Shaadi, not Shahla.
- "Madar" — meaning "Mother," a moving tribute that highlights familial affection and loss.
Career, audience, and context
Habib rose to prominence in the late 20th century and maintained visibility across decades, reaching listeners both in Iran and among Persian-speaking communities abroad. Like several Iranian artists of his generation, he performed and recorded for audiences inside Iran as well as in the diaspora. His work is often played on radio and at cultural gatherings, and several songs have been covered by other performers.
Legacy and final years
Habib's songs continue to be cited as part of the modern Persian popular-song repertoire. He died of a heart attack on 10 June 2016 in Ramsar, Mazandaran, Iran, at the age of 68. Fans and critics remember him for a lyrical directness and a tone that blended vulnerability with melodic clarity.
