Hüsamettin Cindoruk (born 1933) is a Turkish politician known for his leadership in the national legislature during the early 1990s. He rose to prominence as Speaker of the Grand National Assembly and briefly assumed the duties of head of state in a transitional role.
Career and political role
Cindoruk served as the 17th Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey from 1991 to 1995. In that capacity he presided over parliamentary debates, represented the assembly in official functions, and played a visible part in legislative procedures during a turbulent period of coalition governments and political realignment.
His political stance placed him within the broad center-right tradition of Turkish politics. Throughout his career he took part in parliamentary work, coalition negotiations and public debates on constitutional and institutional issues that shaped Turkey's political scene in the 1990s.
Acting presidency, 1993
When President Turgut Özal died in April 1993, the constitution required the Speaker of the assembly to perform the duties of the presidency until a new president was elected. Cindoruk therefore served as Acting President for the brief interval between Özal's death and the formal election of his successor, a temporary stewardship that ensured continuity of state functions.
Notable positions and legacy
- 17th Speaker, Grand National Assembly (1991–1995)
- Acting President of Turkey (1993, interim)
Cindoruk's tenure is often remembered for its procedural importance rather than long-term policy shifts: as Speaker he guided parliamentary business through a period of coalition politics, and as acting head of state he fulfilled a constitutional role that maintained institutional stability.
