Gloria Jones (born October 19, 1945) is an American singer and songwriter whose career has spanned soul, rhythm and blues, and session work. She is most widely known for recording the original 1965 soul version of "Tainted Love", a track that later gained renewed fame through cover versions and the revival of interest in rare soul records.
Early life
Jones was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, and grew up in a musical milieu that exposed her to gospel and rhythm and blues. She moved to Los Angeles as a young adult to pursue recording and performance opportunities. In Los Angeles she developed as an expressive vocalist and began releasing singles and appearing as a featured session singer on other artists' records.
Recording career and "Tainted Love"
Jones's 1965 recording of "Tainted Love" did not become a major mainstream hit at the time of its release, but it later found an audience among collectors and in club scenes that prized deep soul and danceable rarities. Her rendition is noted for its emotive delivery and moody arrangement. Beyond that signature recording, Jones continued to work in the studio as both a lead and backing vocalist and as a contributor to songwriting and arrangements.
Association with Marc Bolan
In the late 1960s and 1970s Jones became closely associated with the British glam rock singer and guitarist Marc Bolan of T. Rex. She performed with Bolan and contributed vocals in that musical circle. On September 16, 1977, Jones was driving a vehicle in which Bolan was a passenger; the car crashed and Bolan was killed. The incident is a well-known and tragic episode linked to both artists' histories.
Later work and legacy
After the 1970s Jones continued to perform, record sporadically and make guest appearances as a backing and session singer. Her early recordings have been reissued and reassessed by historians and collectors, and she is often mentioned in discussions of how classic soul recordings were rediscovered by later generations. As a versatile studio vocalist and songwriter she exemplifies artists who moved between front-line and behind-the-scenes roles during long careers.
