Baker combined a jazz-trained sensibility with the volume and directness of rock. He favored polyrhythms, extended tom-tom patterns and improvisation drawn from jazz and Afrobeat traditions. Critics and peers noted his affinity for jazz fusion phrasing applied to a rock drum kit, and his use of dual bass drums and orchestral percussion textures became highly influential.
Career highlights
After establishing himself on the London scene, Baker formed Cream with Eric Clapton and Jack Bruce; the trio's blend of blues, rock and improvisation helped define late-1960s popular music. He later played in short-lived supergroups such as Blind Faith and led projects that explored rock, jazz and African styles. His work included collaborations with prominent African musicians and experiments that bridged Western rock with world music.

Legacy and influence
Baker's aggressive attack and incorporation of complex rhythmic ideas influenced generations of drummers in rock, early heavy metal and fusion styles. He helped popularize the idea that a drummer could be a front-line soloist rather than only part of the rhythm section.
Personal life, health and death
Known for a combative personality and turbulent relationships with bandmates, Baker also struggled with substance abuse in parts of his career. In 2013 he was diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a condition that affected his breathing. Reports in 2019 described serious illness before he died on 6 October 2019 at the age of 80.
