Baker combined a jazz-trained sensibility with the volume and directness of rock. He favored polyrhythms, extended tom-tom patterns and improvisation drawn from jazz and Afrobeat traditions. Critics and peers noted his affinity for jazz fusion phrasing applied to a rock drum kit, and his use of dual bass drums and orchestral percussion textures became highly influential.

Personal life, health and death

Known for a combative personality and turbulent relationships with bandmates, Baker also struggled with substance abuse in parts of his career. In 2013 he was diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a condition that affected his breathing. Reports in 2019 described serious illness before he died on 6 October 2019 at the age of 80.
