George Rosenkranz — chemist who advanced steroid chemistry and contraceptive development

Hungarian-born Mexican steroid chemist (1916–2019) who led work at Syntex using Mexican plant sterols to create early oral progestins and played a central role in mid-20th-century reproductive chemistry.

George Rosenkranz (born György Rosenkranz; 20 August 1916 – 23 June 2019) was a chemist whose research in steroid chemistry helped transform the production of synthetic hormones. Born in Hungary, he trained in Europe and emigrated to the Americas to escape the rise of Nazism. He ultimately settled and worked for many years in Mexico, becoming a central figure in the industrial and academic development of steroid synthesis.

Early life and migration

Rosenkranz grew up in Central Europe and completed part of his studies in Switzerland. Facing persecution in the 1930s and 1940s, he left Europe and continued his scientific career abroad.
