Early life and colonial career

Reid was born in Scotland in 1845 and emigrated to Australia as a child. He established himself in New South Wales public life and became identified with liberal economic ideas that stressed low tariffs and open markets. In colonial politics he rose to become Premier of New South Wales during the 1890s, a period when debates over trade policy and state finance were intense and closely linked to discussions about federation.

Role in federation and federal politics

Reid was an active participant in debates around Australian federation and entered the new federal parliament in 1901 as the member for East Sydney. He led the parliamentary Free Trade grouping, commonly known as the Free Trade Party, which opposed protective tariffs favored by political rivals. Between 1904 and 1905 he served as Prime Minister, heading a short-lived government that negotiated between emerging party groupings and the governor-general.

Political positions and significance

Reid was noted for his eloquence, sharp debating style, and commitment to free trade and fiscal restraint. His leadership helped define the early party system in Australia, which revolved around tariff policy and the later development of labor politics. Although his term as prime minister was brief, his role as an opposition leader and party organiser shaped parliamentary practice in the new commonwealth.

Later life and legacy

After retiring from the Australian parliament in 1910 he lived in London and, in time, won election to the British House of Commons. Reid died in 1918. Historians view him as an important transitional figure: a colonial statesman who influenced both state and federal institutions, and who bridged political life in Australia and Britain.
