Diosdado "Dado" Madarang Peralta (born March 27, 1952) is a Filipino jurist noted for his service on the Supreme Court of the Philippines. He was appointed by President Rodrigo Duterte as the 26th Chief Justice on October 23, 2019. Before that elevation he served as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court from January 13, 2009 to October 22, 2019.

Role and responsibilities

As Chief Justice, Peralta held the highest judicial office in the Philippines and carried both judicial and administrative duties. The Chief Justice presides over sessions of the Supreme Court, chairs its conferences, assigns opinions when in the majority, and oversees the administrative management of the judiciary, including supervision of lower courts and court personnel. The appointment of a Chief Justice follows a nomination and vetting process involving the Judicial and Bar Council and a formal appointment by the President of the Republic.

Career background

Peralta's long career in the Philippine legal system spans decades and includes work as a judge and jurist at various levels of the judiciary prior to his Supreme Court service. Like many of his peers, his path combined trial and appellate experience, legal scholarship, and administrative responsibilities that prepared him for the court's leadership role.

Judicial impact and significance

During his tenure on the bench, Peralta participated in rulings on constitutional, criminal, and civil matters that shaped legal interpretation in the country. As Chief Justice he also played a part in efforts to improve court administration, case management, and public access to justice. His leadership influenced institutional priorities and the operational functioning of the court system.
