Overview

Dina (born Ondina Maria Farias Veloso; 18 June 1956 – 12 April 2019) was a Portuguese pop singer best known for representing Portugal at the 1992 Eurovision Song Contest. Born in Carregal do Sal in central Portugal, she became part of the national pop scene through recurring appearances at Festival da Canção, the long-standing competition that selects Portugal's Eurovision entry.

Early career and Festival da Canção

Dina first reached national attention when she entered Festival da Canção in 1980, performing the song "Guardando em mim" and finishing in the middle of the field. She returned to the same competition in 1982 with two entries, again placing modestly. These appearances established her as a regular participant in Portugal's televised music festivals and led to further recording and performance opportunities on television and in concerts.

Eurovision 1992

Her breakthrough came in 1992 when the song "Amor d'água fresca" (literally, "Fresh Water Love") won Festival da Canção and became Portugal's official entry for the 37th Eurovision Song Contest. At the international contest, which drew a wide television audience across Europe, Dina performed for Portugal and finished in 17th place. The 1992 contest is often recalled for its diverse musical styles and as a moment in which Portuguese-language songs maintained a presence on the Eurovision stage. For more on the contest, see Eurovision 1992.

Musical style and work

Dina's music is rooted in mainstream Portuguese pop of the 1980s and early 1990s, with melodic songs that emphasize clear vocal delivery and accessible arrangements. During her career she recorded and performed material that appealed to radio and television audiences in Portugal and participated in the country's festival circuit. Her Eurovision entry remains the most widely remembered moment of her public career.

Later life and death

In later years Dina lived and worked in the Lisbon area. She died on 12 April 2019 in Lisbon at the age of 62. The cause of death was reported as idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a chronic lung condition marked by progressive scarring of lung tissue; for medical background, see idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.
