Overview

Deepak Obhrai (July 5, 1950 – August 2, 2019) was a Tanzania-born Canadian politician who served in the House of Commons from 1997 until his death in 2019. He represented a Calgary-area constituency—initially known as Calgary East and, after 2015, as Calgary Forest Lawn—and sat with the Reform Party and its successors before serving as a member of the Conservative Party of Canada. Obhrai was widely recognized as Canada's first Hindu Member of Parliament and, at the time of his death, the longest continuously serving Conservative MP.

Early life and background

Born in present-day Tanzania, Obhrai's origins were in East Africa, where many Canadians of South Asian descent trace their family histories. He later moved to Canada and established his life and career in Calgary, Alberta, becoming an active member of the local community and business circles. His background and personal story made him a notable figure in discussions about immigration, multiculturalism and public service in Canada.

Parliamentary career

Obhrai was first elected to the House of Commons in 1997. He represented his Calgary riding through multiple election cycles and through the evolution of Canada's right-of-centre parties: he began with the Reform Party, and remained with the party as it transformed into the Canadian Alliance and subsequently into the Conservative Party of Canada. During his time in Ottawa he held positions including Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, where he worked on matters related to Canada's international relations and public diplomacy.

Leadership bid and political roles

In 2017 Obhrai launched a campaign for the leadership of the Conservative Party of Canada. His bid attracted attention for highlighting his long parliamentary record and his efforts to broaden the party's appeal to immigrant and minority communities. He was eliminated in the early rounds of voting. Across his career he was known for constituency work in Calgary, vocal support for immigrant communities, and participation in parliamentary committees and debates on foreign policy and trade.

Significance and legacy

  • First Hindu MP: Obhrai is widely recognized as the first person of the Hindu faith elected to the Canadian House of Commons, marking a milestone for representation in federal politics.
  • Long service: Serving continuously from 1997 to 2019, he was among the most long-standing Conservative MPs at the time of his death, reflecting sustained electoral support in his Calgary constituencies.
  • Community engagement: He was active in local affairs and in efforts to engage ethnic and faith communities in the political process.

Death and remembrance

Deepak Obhrai died in Calgary on August 2, 2019, at the age of 69 after a battle with liver cancer. His passing prompted tributes from colleagues across the political spectrum and from community leaders who recognized his contributions to public life and to the representation of diverse voices in Parliament.
