Jackson DeForest Kelley (January 20, 1920 – June 11, 1999) was an American actor whose career spanned decades of film and television. He is most widely remembered for his portrayal of Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy in the original Star Trek television series and the subsequent feature films, a role that made him a cultural icon.

Early career and screen work

Kelley began acting in small parts across Hollywood productions, often appearing in Westerns and as a supporting player in studio pictures and television series. His steady presence and ability to convey warmth and blunt honesty made him a reliable character actor long before his association with Star Trek brought him international recognition.

Star Trek and the character of McCoy

Cast in 1966 as the ship's chief medical officer, Kelley created Dr. McCoy's signature combination of gruffness, moral feeling and sharp repartee. Nicknamed "Bones" by Captain Kirk, the character frequently delivered memorable lines that were both diagnostic and philosophical. Kelley continued to portray McCoy in the motion pictures that followed the original series, helping to anchor the franchise's emotional core.

Acting style and public image

Kelley's screen persona mixed sardonic humor with a sincere bedside manner. He was skilled at making technical or sentimental dialogue feel natural and human. Outside the role of McCoy he remained a recognizable face in television guest spots and film supporting roles, admired for a grounded, accessible presence.

Legacy and recognition

Though Kelley never sought to overshadow his colleagues, his performance influenced later portrayals of on-board physicians in science fiction. He maintained a devoted fan following, attended conventions, and was often associated with key franchise catchphrases.
