In 1975 Forbes was reported to have been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, a development that affected his working life. Decades later he stated that the original diagnosis may have been incorrect. He continued to write and to comment on film and literature in later years. Forbes died on 8 May 2013 in Virginia Water, Surrey after a prolonged illness, at the age of 86.
