Overview

Bryce Chad Salvador (born February 11, 1976 in Brandon, Manitoba) is a Canadian professional ice hockey alumnus best known for a long NHL career as a right-shot defenceman. Drafted in 1994, he established himself as a veteran presence with the St. Louis Blues and later the New Jersey Devils, where he became a club leader.

Characteristics and playing style

Salvador was viewed as a stay-at-home, physical defenceman who emphasized positioning, shot blocking and defensive zone reliability over offensive production. His leadership qualities and work ethic made him a trusted figure on penalty kill units and in match-up situations. He played within the pace and structure common to players who prioritize team defense in the NHL.

Career path and highlights

Selected in the sixth round, 138th overall, of the 1994 NHL Entry Draft by the Tampa Bay Lightning, Salvador worked his way to full-time NHL duty through professional development and time in minor leagues. He broke through with the St. Louis organization and later signed with New Jersey, where he enjoyed the most sustained part of his top-level career. In 2013 he was chosen to wear the Devils' captaincy, a recognition of his leadership on and off the ice. Salvador announced his retirement from playing in 2015 after more than a decade at the NHL level.
