Early life and education

Born in 1915 into the Wellesley family, he received a traditional upper‑class British education. He attended Eton College and later matriculated at New College, Oxford. Those formative years prepared him for a career in the armed forces and responsibilities as a hereditary peer.

Military career

Wellesley served for many years in the British Army, rising to the rank of brigadier. His service reflected the long association between the Wellesley family and Britain's military history: the dukedom itself was founded in recognition of the achievements of the first Duke, a well‑known military commander. As a senior officer he combined command duties with the ceremonial and representational roles often expected of aristocratic officers.

Public life and the peerage

On succeeding to the title in 1972 he took his seat in the House of Lords, where hereditary peers traditionally contributed to legislative review. He remained a member until the reforms enacted by the House of Lords Act 1999 removed the automatic right of most hereditary peers to sit. His peerage is part of the broader British peerage system, which blends historic titles with modern public duties.

Residence, family seat and legacy

His principal residence was Stratfield Saye House in Hampshire, an estate long associated with the Dukes of Wellington. The house served as both a private home and a symbol of continuity for the family's public identity. He lived to the age of 99 and died at Stratfield Saye on 31 December 2014. His longevity and the span of his life linked the 20th and early 21st centuries in the story of a historic aristocratic family.
