Andrea Horwath (born October 24, 1962) is a Canadian politician who has represented the riding of Hamilton Centre in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario since 2004. Before entering provincial politics she worked in community development and served on Hamilton city council.
Municipal beginnings
Horwath's public career began at the municipal level, where she was elected to Hamilton City Council in the late 1990s and served until winning a seat at Queen's Park. Her municipal experience focused on neighbourhood and community issues, which informed her later work as a provincial legislator.
Provincial career
She was first elected to the provincial legislature in 2004 and has been re-elected by the people of Hamilton Centre in subsequent provincial elections. Over multiple terms she has held roles as an opposition critic and as a prominent voice on social and economic policy.
Leader of the provincial NDP
In 2009 Horwath won the leadership of the Ontario New Democratic Party. Under her leadership the party became the Official Opposition following the 2018 provincial election; she served as Leader of the Official Opposition in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 2018 until 2022. She stepped down as party leader in 2022 but has continued to serve as MPP for Hamilton Centre.
