Andrea Leadsom (born 13 May 1963) is a British Conservative politician who has represented South Northamptonshire in the House of Commons since 2010. A former finance professional, Leadsom entered Parliament after a career in the City and rose through ministerial ranks to hold senior roles in government. She is known both for her prominent support for the United Kingdom leaving the European Union and for two attempts to lead the Conservative Party.
Background and early career
Before entering politics, Leadsom worked in financial services. Her experience in the private sector informed her focus on business regulation, industry, and economic policy after she became an MP. Leadsom has presented herself as an advocate for small businesses and entrepreneurial activity, arguing that government should create conditions that support investment and jobs.
Parliamentary and ministerial roles
Leadsom was first elected to Parliament in 2010. Over the next decade she held several government positions. From 2017 to 2019 she served as Leader of the House of Commons, a role that involves arranging government business in the Commons and representing the chamber in the Cabinet. In July 2019 she was appointed Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, a senior Cabinet post responsible for industry, energy policy and aspects of economic strategy; she held that office into early 2020. Her ministerial work combined attention to industrial policy with a focus on energy security and regulatory frameworks.
Leadership bids and Brexit
Leadsom played a visible part in the campaign for the UK to leave the EU in the 2016 referendum. Following that vote she stood for the Conservative Party leadership. In the 2016 contest she reached the final stages of the selection but withdrew before a ballot of Conservative members, allowing her rival, Theresa May, to become leader. In 2019, after disagreements over the government's approach to Brexit, Leadsom resigned her government position in May and launched a second leadership bid; she was eliminated in the first round of voting.
Positions, controversies and public profile
Leadsom is identified with pro-Brexit conservatism and business-friendly policy. Her public profile has been marked by intensive media scrutiny during the leadership contests and by debate over statements on experience and representation in government. Supporters view her as energetic and focused on economic growth; critics have sometimes questioned her judgement or comments, especially during high-profile campaigns.
