Bid, symbols and preparations

Venues, infrastructure and events

Competition used 37 venues across Beijing and nearby areas; about a dozen were newly constructed for the Games, including the Beijing National Stadium (the "Bird's Nest") and the National Aquatics Center (the "Water Cube"). Hosts invested heavily in transport and public works: new subway lines, upgraded airport facilities and road improvements were part of a wider urban redevelopment programme. The programme spanned 28 sports, with events staged in arenas, aquatic centres, velodromes and temporary outdoor sites.

The decision to award the Games to Beijing provoked debate in the years before 2008. Critics raised concerns about human rights, media freedoms and environmental issues such as air quality; organizers responded with diplomatic engagement, environmental measures and a heavy security and media-management presence. The Games also faced the routine international scrutiny that follows any major multi-sport event, including a sustained focus on anti-doping and fair play.

The legacy of the 2008 Olympics is multifaceted: the physical infrastructure — sporting venues, transport links and urban renewal projects — shaped Beijing's long-term development, while the scale and profile of the ceremonies and competitions changed perceptions of China's international role.
