Overview
Zaporizhzhia Oblast (Ukrainian: Запорізька область) is an administrative region (an oblast, comparable to a province) in southern Ukraine. Its administrative centre is the city of Zaporizhzhia, an industrial and transport hub; official population figures recorded approximately 1,774,000 inhabitants in 2014. The oblast stretches along both banks of the Dnieper River and contains a mix of steppe, river floodplain and urbanized industrial zones.

The Dnieper River is a defining natural feature, forming reservoirs and islands such as Khortytsia, a large river island with cultural and ecological importance. The climate is temperate continental, supporting grain cultivation and sunflower farming in rural districts. The region includes wetlands, steppe pasture, and sections transformed by industry and hydropower projects.
Key infrastructure includes major road and rail corridors and large energy installations. Notably, the region hosts a major nuclear power station near the town of Enerhodar, and several heavy-industry complexes concentrated around the regional capital.
Economy and society
- Industry: metallurgy, machine building, and energy production are prominent.
- Agriculture: grain, oilseeds and livestock in rural districts.
- Transport: river ports on the Dnieper and connecting rail links to other regions.
The oblast has a multiethnic population with Ukrainian and Russian communities among others. Urban areas around Zaporizhzhia are densely industrialized, while outlying districts remain more agricultural and sparsely populated.
Since the 2010s the region has been affected by wider political and military developments in Ukraine; these events have influenced administration, security, and economic activity.
