Zaporizhzhya (Ukrainian Запоріжжя, German also Saporischja or Saporishshja, Russian Запорожье Zaporozhye, formerly Ukrainian Oleksandriwsk, Russian Alexandrovsk) is the capital of Zaporizhzhya Oblast in southern Ukraine and the sixth-largest city in Ukraine with a population of about 760,000 (2015). The major city is located on the Dnieper River 70 km south of Dnipro.
Zaporizhzhya is an important transport hub, an industrial center as well as a cultural center with universities, theaters and museums. The city is home to many attractions, such as Khortytsia Island. In 2017-2018, the city government, with the support of the Canadian consulting institute Partnership for Local Economic Development and Democratic Governance, prepared the Development Strategy 2018, the goals of which have been implemented since 2018 in the areas of ecology, economy, public infrastructure, and education and research.
