Zarqan (Persian: زرقان, also Romanized as Zarqān and known historically as Zarghanak or Zargān) is a city in southwestern Iran. It is the administrative capital of Zarqan District, within Shiraz County of Fars Province. Located within the cultural region surrounding the major city of Shiraz, Zarqan functions as a local service and market town for nearby rural communities.

Geography and climate

Zarqan sits on the plains that extend from the Zagros foothills toward the wider fields of Fars. The city's climate is broadly semi‑arid: summers tend to be hot and dry while winters are relatively mild with occasional rain. The surrounding landscape supports orchards, dry‑farm agriculture and patches of irrigated land where local farmers grow seasonal crops.

History and administration

The settlement has long been part of the historical region administered from Shiraz and shares the province's Persian cultural background. Today Zarqan is governed as the center of its district and falls under the jurisdiction of Shiraz County in Fars Province (administrative division). Its alternate names reflect local pronunciation and older mappings.

Economy and society

The local economy is based largely on small‑scale agriculture, commerce and services that support nearby villages. Markets and family businesses supply everyday goods, and many residents maintain social and economic ties to Shiraz for education, healthcare and employment. The population is predominantly Persian‑speaking and follows the cultural and religious patterns common across Fars Province.

Transport and connections

  • Zarqan is connected by regional roads to Shiraz and other nearby towns, facilitating trade and commuting.
  • The city's location near larger transport routes gives it a role as a local hub for surrounding rural areas.
  • Access to Shiraz provides residents with wider services, higher education institutions and medical facilities.

While modest in size, Zarqan exemplifies many small urban centers in Iran that balance local agricultural life with administrative responsibilities and links to nearby metropolitan centers.
