Yusuf al-Qaradawi (Arabic: يوسف القرضاوي; 9 September 1926 – 26 September 2022) was an influential Sunni Islamic theologian born in Egypt and later based in Qatar. He served as chairman of the International Union of Muslim Scholars and became widely known through media, online outreach and numerous published works. He spent much of his later life in Doha and was a prominent public voice on religion and contemporary social issues.

Trained in traditional Islamic studies, al‑Qaradawi studied at al‑Azhar and other institutions in Egypt before moving into a public role as a preacher, writer and teacher. During his career he combined classical jurisprudence with attempts to address modern political and social questions. He wrote extensively on topics such as ritual law, ethics, family matters and the relationship between Islam and governance.

Media presence and institutions

Al‑Qaradawi reached a global audience through broadcasting and the internet. He hosted the long‑running programme "al‑Sharīʿa wa al‑Ḥayāh" ("Sharia and Life") on Al Jazeera, which brought religious rulings and discussions to a large and diverse viewership. He was also a founding religious scholar of IslamOnline, established in 1997, which became one of the most visited Arabic‑language Islamic websites.
