Yusuf Kironde Lule (10 April 1912 – 21 January 1985) was a Ugandan educator and politician best known for serving briefly as the head of state of Uganda in 1979. Sometimes spelled Yusufu, Lule rose from a long career in education and public service to lead the country during a turbulent transition following the overthrow of Idi Amin. His short tenure and subsequent exile have made him a notable figure in Uganda’s modern political history.

Early life and career

Lule was born in 1912 and trained as a teacher and academic. He worked in education and civil service roles and was associated with institutions of higher learning. Over decades he built a reputation as a senior educator and administrator, which later contributed to his selection as a compromise leader by political opponents of the Amin regime. After only a few weeks in office, Lule was removed by the national consultative body that had appointed him. The brief administration struggled with competing factions and differing expectations about reconstruction, justice and governance. Following his removal, Lule went into exile in the United Kingdom, where he lived out the remainder of his life while remaining a reference point in discussions about Uganda’s post‑Amin reconstruction.

Death and legacy

Lule died on 21 January 1985 in London’s Hammersmith Hospital of kidney failure. He is remembered for his role as a transitional civilian leader at a critical moment, for his long service in education, and for the complexities his short presidency revealed about coalition politics in post‑conflict states.
