Yitzhak Livni: Israeli Journalist and Broadcasting Leader

Career and roles

Livni began his journalistic career in the 1950s and became known as an incisive journalist and personality. He edited the army publications Bamahane Nahal and Bamahane, where he worked with young reporters and helped set editorial standards. In the late 1960s he was appointed head of the IDF radio station Galatz, overseeing programming and a transition toward a broader, more modern sound. Later he served as CEO of the Israel Broadcasting Authority (IBA), where he managed a complex public institution that combined news, culture and entertainment for a diverse audience.

Background and personal life

Born in Łódź, Poland, Livni emigrated with his family to Tel Aviv as a child and grew up in the emerging Israeli press environment. He was married in the 1960s to the poet Dahlia Ravikovitch, and later to Eti Livni, who served as a member of the Knesset. He and his spouses raised three children.

Legacy and significance

Livni is remembered for strengthening the professionalism of military journalism and for his stewardship of public broadcasting at a time when radio and television were central to Israeli public life. Colleagues noted his editorial rigor and commitment to a public service ethos. He remained a reference point for later generations of Israeli broadcasters and journalists until his death in 2017.
