Biography

Sofer was born in Eger, Hungary in 1923 into a milieu shaped by long-standing rabbinic traditions. He lived through the cataclysms of World War II and, after surviving the Holocaust, devoted his life to the spiritual and institutional revival of his community. In the postwar years he worked to reconstitute learning frameworks and communal life for survivors and their families.

Institution building

Determined to recreate a center of learning and practice, Sofer founded study institutions and a yeshiva, initially re-establishing activity in Hungary and later founding institutions in Israel. His educational initiatives included frameworks for advanced Torah study and schools aimed at transmitting traditional modes of scholarship to new generations.
