Early history and Olympic recognition

The national body charged with Olympic affairs was established in the early 1970s and later received formal recognition by the International Olympic Committee. Yemeni delegations have typically been small in number, often composed of a handful of athletes rather than large teams. Distinct periods: North and South Yemen

Before 1990, the two Yemeni states had separate sporting institutions and sent independent delegations to the Olympics. North Yemen participated in the mid-1980s Games, while South Yemen made at least one appearance before unification. After 1990, athletes have competed under a single Yemeni flag and committee. Yemen has not been represented at the Winter Olympic Games, reflecting climate, resources and sporting traditions.

Performance, significance and challenges

To date, Yemenese athletes have not earned an Olympic medal and the nation's medal table remains empty (medal record). Factors that affect performance include limited funding for elite sport, the difficulty of maintaining training facilities, and political instability that can disrupt preparation and participation. Despite these challenges, Olympic participation remains important for national visibility, athlete development and the promotion of sport domestically.
